Toy Dog Breeds, small in size, big in personality.

Home | Toy Dog Breeds

Many Toy Dog Breeds have been bred smaller by a process called "selective miniaturization", this is a process of continually selecting the smallest of the each generation of dog until you finally end up with the smallest dog possible.

The smallest of them all is the Chihuahua, the largest is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. All of the toy breeds are compact enough to curl up in a small corner of the couch, many small enough to sit on your lap, hence their nick name "the lap dog".

The Small Breeds always seem to be full of fun and mischief, I've had two, a Shih Tzu and a Yorkshire Terrier. If you'd like to see them click here to read more about them.

The favorites of royalty and nobility toy dog breeds were kept as companion and alarm dogs. Their desire to be around people and adaptability to smaller living spaces make them an ideal apartment dweller and are a favorite for city people.

These Dogs Make Up The Toy Dog Group:

• Affenpinscher
• Brussels Griffon
• Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Chihuahua
Chinese Crested
• English Toy Spaniel
